DVD-box Urban Century
The four DVDs in this boxed set are part of the Urban Century cross-medial festival that the VPRO is presenting in cooperation with the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam in September and October 2009 via radio, television, internet and in the VPRO programming guide.
For the first time in history, more than half of the world's population lives in cities - often in slums - and global migration to the cities is ongoing. Living in the city has become the dominant way of life worldwide. The city is no longer just a dot on the map; it is a way of life. The VPRO considers this reason to both look back and to look ahead, to connect thinking about the future of the city with experiences from the past. And to put the Dutch concept of city in a global perspective. Which factors define the quality of life in cities? What works and what doesn't? And who's in charge? Do people make the city, or does the city make the people?
Four documentaries in the boxed set Urban Century:
I am Gurgaon: The New City in India (Tegenlicht)
Grand Paris: The President and The Architect (Tegenlicht)
New to the City (Metropolis)
Stayin' alive in Jo'burg (Holland Doc)
The boxed DVD set is for sale at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) where the main exhibition of the 4th IABR is being presented. The boxed set may also be ordered online from the VPRO.
