Opening YOUR CITY,
Young people are making Rotterdam Zuid
On Tuesday 13 October 2009 Your City: Young people are making Rotterdam Zuid an initiative of Stichting Kijk op Zuid and AIR begins. In the months ahead young people will determine what happens on bridges and undeveloped land. Together with architects and artists, they will work on plans for their immediate habitat.
I Bridge You
Entrepreneurship, meeting each other and listening to music; it's all part of I Bridge You. Across a pedestrian bridge between shopping centre Zuidplein and the Motorstraat area a new, eight meters tall 'living' bridge is constructed. On this bridge, designed with a very open nature, all kinds of places are created where young people can present their ideas about entrepreneurship to each other and to all Zuidplein visitors. For three days, I Bridge You is a stage for presentations and exhibitions; a meeting place and workshop to develop public space, created for and by young people. For example, there will be an office, a terrace, a stage and retail units managed by young people. The construction of the bridge starts on 16 October.
Freestyle Sports
The city is a playground for skaters, freerunners and other street sports. The street sportsters use their city in a unique way. The meaning of freestyle sports will be researched by Iris Schutten and the results of this study includes a new map of Rotterdam Zuid; public space as seen through the eyes of street sportsters. These results will be used by 2012Architecten to build a temporary arena with a sports track involving young people in the construction process. What does their ideal public space look like and how can they make the best use of this space? As if by magic, 2012Architecten and young people will transform the Motorstraat area into a stadium with a sports track. It will serve as a free zone for informal and formal streets sports.
Your City is a widely programmed event during which young people and professional architects, city planners, developers and artists consider how urban space can both physically and mentally be designed differently. They will create their own urban space based on the environment they live in, thus improving both the image they have of themselves as well as the image of Rotterdam Zuid.
