Pass Travels around the Portscapes Art Projects on the Maasvlakte, Rotterdam
On Sunday 8 November SKOR and the Rotterdam Port Authority are organizing a tour, Pass travels, around various art projects on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, in cooperation with the International Architecture Biennial Rotterdam. This was developed in the context of Portscapes, a series of art projects related to the construction of the Maasvlakte 2 on the initiative of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. The Maasvlakte 2 is an extension of the port of Rotterdam by 2000 hectares, which will be achieved in the North Sea in the next five years.
SKOR invited the curator duo Latitudes (Max Andrews & Mariana Cánepa Luna) to do research into the architectural, political, social and ecological aspects of the past, present ánd future of the Rotterdam port with a focus on the new Maasvlakte 2. Portscapes consists of ten projects and reflections in and about the Maasvlakte developed by Dutch and international artists, such as interventions, performances and mobile seminars.
A summary of the Portscapes exhibition can be seen in the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam from 5 February 2009.
Pass travels programme on 8 November
10.00 a.m.
Leave NAI Rotterdam, Museumpark 25 3015 CB, Rotterdam
On the way you can listen to 'philosophical dialogues' on headphones in the bus. Amongst others, Hans Aarsman, an industrial ecologist, a botanist and an archaeologist, will describe their vision of the Maasvlakte on the basis of their field of expertise. The artistic duo FGA broadcast these conversations from a temporary web radio station in a container unit which they moved into on the Maasvlakte between 21 August and 21 September.
10.45 a.m.
Visit to Wastelands by Lara Almarcegui.
Almarcegui carried out research into the 'disused' sites which can be found all over the Port of Rotterdam and produced a newspaper about this. The botanist Remko Andeweg gave a description of these areas which are characterised by an apparent lack of human intervention.
12.00 a.m.
Arrival at Futureland, the Maasvlakte information centre.
On the way we pass the billboards of the artists Marjolijn Dijkman, Jorge Satorre, Paulien Oltheten and Hans Schabus. An explanation of these artworks is given by the curator duo Latitudes (Max Andrews & Mariana Cánepa Luna)
Lunch in Futureland, provided by the Rotterdam Port Authority.
Presentation by Latitudes, the curators of Portscapes (Max Andrews & Mariana Cánepa Luna)
1.00 p.m.
A tour of the artworks in and around Futureland.
You can view the work by Paulien Oltheten and Hans Schabus and explore the area with Ilana Halperin's audio tour. Halperin created a fascinating narrative from fragments which are not only based on fact, fiction and her own research, but also on the conclusions of volcanologists, geologists and the experts involved in the construction of Maasvlakte 2.
1.30 p.m.
Postpetrolistic Internationale, Performance by Roman Keller & Christina Hemauer
They had a wooden stage transported on the Rhine from Basel to Rotterdam. At various locations a local choir sings a song on the stage against a background of local industry, to mark man's changing relationship to fossil fuels and energy consumption.
2 p.m.
Start of the trip back to NAI Rotterdam with a number of stops at various art projects along the way: Wastelands by Lara Almarcegui and works by Paulien Oltheten.
3 p.m.
Arrival in NAI Rotterdam and the end of Pass travels
