The documentary ‘Leegstand zonder Zorgen’ [Carefree Vacant Property] by Abel Heijkamp (54’) represents the first time anybody has taken a detailed look at the corporate alternative to squatting: anti-squat. Prospective ‘houseguards’ are promised temporary housing in fantastic places at virtually no cost. However, these promises do not always ring true. Heijkamp’s documentary has a strong sense of timing, being launched at the very moment in which the Dutch Government seeks to promote anti-squatting as a viable and legal alternative to illegal squatting.
